Jae Kim
MSW, Supervisee in Social Work

Hello. A little bit about myself: I graduated undergrad from Boston College with dual degrees in Psychology and Literature. I received my MSW from VCU.
My professional background and experiences include:

Individual and group therapy working with breast cancer survivors in remission, as well as newly diagnosed and metastatic populations. Working with these vulnerable, yet incredibly strong and passionate women has indelibly added to and changed my personal and professional beliefs about the concept of grief. It has allowed for unique approaches with other clients in collaboratively reframing aspects of their lives in terms of loss and renewal in order to access insights which allow for different possibilities in perspectives to modulate their desire for change.

I am also no stranger to various student populations having worked with immigrant students of all nationalities as an ESL teacher for several years as well as also teaching A.P. U.S. History prior to receiving my MSW. I am attuned to the needs of student populations in general and the daily struggles of balancing school and family as well as the social interactions which negatively impact their self-esteem and subjective realities.

My main focus for the past several years has been actively listening to and working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and their families dealing with the most debilitating traumas which include sexual assault as well as the developmental trauma of the most severe spectrum of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the subsequent mental health issues which develop due to these traumatic ACEs well into adulthood. Some of the most exponentially affected populations I serve are members of the LGBTQIA + community who are prone to the intersectional effects of their identity.

With all the clients with whom I collaborate, I have found marked success with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in combination with other modalities utilizing an eclectic therapeutic model which incorporates a trauma-informed care approach combining the latest evidence-based interventions with more experimental and empowering qualitative ones which actively seek to touch on the identified needs of clients. The most enduring qualities for working with any population is a client-centered and humanistic approach which values collaboratively accessing the client’s voice and power to be an active participant in their well-being.
